Hiking in the Italian Dolomites

Although Central Asia is a region that many travelers aren’t familiar with, this trip will make it obvious that&nbsp;Central Asia is not the middle of nowhere but instead perhaps at the center of... everything.&nbsp;This region was at the&nbsp;heart of the Silk Road and many powerful empires for thousands of years&nbsp;and facilitated the exchange of goods, ideas, and culture between the East and the West. This trip will take you to see what the second most mountainous country in the world has to offer, from a&nbsp;UNESCO World Heritage Site to the most&nbsp;epic parts of the Pamir-Alay Mountain Range to experience the wild beauty of Kyrgyzstan’s mountains for six days, which includes four days of trekking and one day of horseback riding.&nbsp;&nbsp;This trip through the heart of Central Asia begins in&nbsp;Osh, one of the oldest cities on the continent that has been a hub for caravans and travelers for centuries. During the trek, the group will be immersed in Kyrgyz culture, which has traditionally been nomadic, by staying in yurt camps and a guesthouse along the way.&nbsp;Many people in Kyrgyzstan are still semi-nomadic today, moving livestock to higher pastures in the mountains in the summer and setting up yurts for the season. The families who run each yurt camp often welcome groups by playing music on traditional instruments like the komuz and teaching guests how to bake bread or make felt. You have to visit for yourself in order to feel the kind hospitality. The alpine views from the trek are of massive (some over 7,000m, almost 23,000 feet!) mountains with snow capped peaks, glaciers, green valleys, many towns, yaks, marmots, eagles, grazing cows, horses, and sheep.&nbsp;&nbsp;After returning to Osh for after the trek, where the group will celebrate together and reflect on the journey over a finale dinner in town.&nbsp;While Kyrgyzstan is blowing up on social media, this itinerary takes you beyond the well-worn trail and is truly a journey through time and tradition that will change your outlook on the world&nbsp;and have you heading to your next destination at the end of the trip having made a group of new friends who love to explore as much as you do.&nbsp;

It is recommended that those who join this trip have either hiked with TWC before, hiked on their own before, or have extensive travel experience, but information on how to best prepare to make the hikes as comfortable as possible will also be given.&nbsp;Prepared hikers are the happiest hikers.&nbsp;​5.&nbsp;All travelers should also be aware of the high altitudes of many of the destinations on this trip. Osh, the first stop of the trip, is at an elevation of 3,300ft/1,000m. From there, the group will be driven to 9,842ft/3,000m for the first night on the trekking route. The second night of the trek will be spent at 11,500ft/3500m, and the group will hike to a maximum of 13,615ft/4150m. The third night of the trek will be spent at 10,826ft/3300m, and the group will hike to a maximum of 14,127ft/4306m the next day. The fourth night of the trek will be spent at 11,811ft/3600m. The fifth night of the trek will be spent at 9,186ft/2800m.&nbsp;Optional excursions may be at higher altitudes. Everyone reacts to altitude differently, regardless of fitness and age, and high altitudes should be taken seriously. For details on how to best prepare in advance and what to do in the event you are affected during the trip, please consult your physician.&nbsp;​6. Italy takes a hiking trip to the next level. It may be the cuisine, the rich history, or the art and culture. According to Gavin, the allure is due to the fact that you can order a cappuccino almost anywhere in the Dolomites, even at the top of a mountain. Regardless, once you see these views in person, you'll see exactly what the hype is about.&nbsp;The Dolomites are a mountain range in the northern Italian Alps and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so nature lovers and history buffs will both be in their element. However, this trip doesn't start and end in the mountains. Instead, the trip will begin with an afternoon in Venice&nbsp;for those who arrive early on arrival day and then end in the hills of the Prosecco region in Pieve di Soligo for the last night. On arrival day, those who check in before midday will have an opportunity to take a short train ride to Venice, the floating city, to walk along the canals to the must-see spots. In the evening, there will be an included welcome dinner for the group to get to know each other over delicious authentic Italian food.&nbsp; The next day, the group will take transportation into the mountains, beginning with two nights in Cortina d'Ampezzo, a chic resort town at the heart of the Dolomites surrounded by snow-capped peaks. After settling in, the first order of business will be heading as a group to Lago di Braies, one of the most picturesque spots on the trip. After an evening exploring town and waking up to a cozy breakfast, the group will head out for the first day hike of the trip, and the views around Tre Cime di Lavaredo don't disappoint. The group will stop at several rifugi, Italian mountain huts accessible only by foot or cable car, on the way.&nbsp; The next morning the group will head out for a big adventure: two days of hiking on the Alta Via 1, a night in a rifugio, and 2 via ferratas. The most famous and renowned trail in the Dolomites is the Alta Via 1, and this trip will take the group on 2 of the best days (or 3 if you choose to hike on your free day!). The group will depart Cortina d'Ampezzo in the morning and hike to a rifugio where a warm lunch will be served with a local hiking guide. From there, the group will complete a shorter second half of the hike to the rifugio that will be home for one night.&nbsp;No trip to the Dolomites is complete without a stay at a rifugio, an Italian mountain "hut." The rifugi all over the Dolomites range in quality, but TWC has picked one of the best.&nbsp; The next morning, the group will have the option to hike for an extra hour for an incredible sunrise view at a rifugio even higher up. Once back down, everyone will sit for a coffee and breakfast before being joined by a team of professional mountain guides to begin the day's hike that includes 2 via ferratas,&nbsp;which are routes that include cables, steel ladders, and steel steps. (Note: the via ferratas will not be mandatory but are included in the trip cost because they are special to the culture and adventurous spirit of the region. All safety gear will be included, such as the harness and clips to be clipped in.)&nbsp;The origins of via ferratas date back to the nineteenth century but are associated with the First World War when several were built in the Dolomites to aid the movement of troops.&nbsp;During the war, the frontline between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian army ran through the Dolomites. Over 1,000 via ferratas currently still exist in the European Alps. The first via ferrata will allow the group to summit the mountain that overlooks the rifugio from the previous night and get 360 degree views of the Dolomites. From there, the group will hike down the valley and stop for lunch. Next, the group will hike in a section of WW1 tunnels. This section is technically a via ferrata, so the group will use the safety equipment and be led by the mountain guides. However, in the tunnels, the group will primarily be walking up stairs, and there are many openings in the tunnels that provide light and fresh air. At the top, the group will walk through an open-air museum and learn about the history and significance of the tunnels and surrounding area. From there, a cable car will be taken back down, and the next stop will be the hotel nestled in the mountains for the evening. The group will celebrate their accomplishments together over an included dinner. The next day is a free day, and the options are plentiful. Travelers can choose to hike another day on the Alta Via 1, as the trailhead is very nearby to the hotel. Additionally, rafting, taking a cooking class, and paragliding are all options. Another dinner is included.&nbsp; On the last full day, the group will (begrudgingly) leave the Dolomites and head to Pieve di Soligo in the Prosecco region for a night in the picturesque Italian countryside. The afternoon will be spent enjoying an included wine tasting (non-alcoholic alternatives provided), vineyard visit, and snacks. The group's last night together will be spend in a traditional borgo, which is a small village on a hilltop looking over vineyards, that dates back to Roman times. It can't get more Italian than that, y'all. The trip will end in the traditional TWC way, going&nbsp;over the highs and lows of the trip. The last night's dessert will be even sweeter after a week in the mountains spent with new hiking buddies. Airport transfers to Venice will be included on the last day, and those departing later in the day can explore the town and countryside or go into Venice again for exploration.&nbsp;

Note: When searching for flights, it is sometimes more affordable to book a round-trip flight to another airport in Europe and then book a round-trip flight or train tickets to Venice from there. Flight to Venice

&nbsp;Airport transfers will be provided from Venice's Marco Polo Airport for arrivals before 4pm local time.On arrival day, those who check in before midday will have an opportunity to take a short train ride to Venice, the floating city to walk along the canals to the must-see spots.In the evening, there will be an included welcome dinner of delicious authentic Italian food. (Don't worry, dietary restrictions can be accommodated!) This is a great way for the group to get to know each other!​Dinner is included.

Day 1  

After an included European breakfast, the group will pack up and depart together for the mountains!​After a few viewpoints on the way, the group will arrive in Cortina d'Ampezzo, a chic resort town at the heart of the Dolomites surrounded by snow-capped peaks. After settling in, it will be time to head as a group to&nbsp;Lago di Braies, one of the most picturesque spots on the trip. This emerald green lake is known as "Pearl of the Alps" and is so popular that it has become very difficult to get to. Luckily, you'll have private transportation with the group and won't have to worry about any of the logistics.After returning back to town, there will be time to explore Cortina and join the group for an optional dinner in the evening. Due to the way that restaurants fill up, we'll have reservations in place.Breakfast is included.&nbsp;

Transfer into the Dolomites + Lago di Braies

Day 2

This morning the group will wake up early to a filling breakfast. Then it will be time for the first day hike of the trip:&nbsp;Tre Cime di Lavaredo, which translates to "three peaks" after the distinctive rock formation this hike loops around.&nbsp;​This hike is another iconic spot in the Dolomites that is difficult to get to, but the group will have private transportation and a local guide for the day.&nbsp;​The day will begin with a viewpoint of the Auronzo valley and the Cadini di Misurina, a ridgeline of dramatic jagged peaks. The next stop will be Rifugio Lavaredo, where people can grab a pastry and/or a coffee, use the bathroom, or refill on water.​&nbsp;A rifugio is an Italian mountain hut accessible only by foot or cable car.&nbsp;​The hike is approximately 8 miles/13km with 2100ft/640m of elevation gain.Breakfast and lunch are included.&nbsp;

Tre Cime di Lavaredo Hike

Day 3

After breakfast the next morning, the group will head out for a big adventure: a day of hiking on the Alta Via 1, ending with&nbsp;a night in a rifugio.The first part of the day will be a hike to the rifugio where a warm lunch will be served with a local hiking guide. From there, it's a shorter&nbsp;second half of the day hiking to the rifugio that will be home for one night.&nbsp;The rifugi all over the Dolomites range in quality, but TWC has picked one of the best. The rooms are cozy with local fir and pine wood elements, clean white linens, and heaters. The dining included at the rifugio is prepared by a chef with a seasonal menu, and there is even a high-altitude cellar with a sommelier.&nbsp;​​The hike is approximately 7 miles/11.5km with 3500ft/1066m elevation gain in total.​Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Day 4

The next morning, the group will have the option to hike for an extra hour for an incredible sunrise view at a mountain hut even higher up.Once back down, everyone will sit for a coffee and breakfast before being joined by a team of professional mountain guides to begin the day's hike that includes 2 via ferratas,&nbsp;which are routes that include cables, steel ladders, and steel steps.Note: the via ferratas will not be mandatory but are included in the trip cost because they are special to the culture and adventurous spirit of the region. Day 5

It's time for a free day! By this point, the group will be bonded over several days of exploring together, so it's easy to connect with others in the group who may be interested in doing the same free day activity as you. TWC assists in planning the free day activities, and the options are plentiful. Travelers can choose to hike another day on the Alta Via 1 with Gavin and Jess. Additionally, rafting, taking a cooking class, and paragliding are all options.&nbsp;​At the end of the day, the group will come back together for an included dinner at the lodge. As opposed to Cortina and the other destinations on the trip, Alta Badia is in the province of South Tyrol, where it's more common to hear German spoken than Italian, and German food is served.​Breakfast and dinner are included.

Free Day

Day 6

On the last full day, the group will (begrudgingly) leave the Dolomites and head to Pieve di Soligo in the Prosecco region for a night in the quaint Italian countryside.The afternoon will be spent enjoying an included wine tasting (non-alcoholic alternatives provided), vineyard visit, and snacks. The hotel for the night is in a traditional borgo, which is a small village on a hilltop looking over vineyards, that dates back to Roman times.The trip will end in the traditional TWC way, going over the highs and lows of the trip. The last night's dessert will be even sweeter after a week in the mountains spent with new hiking buddies. ​​Breakfast is included.

Time for the final goodbyes! (Where will the reunion be?!) Enjoy one last included breakfast and soak up the Italian vibes.​Professional transportation from the accommodation to the Venice airport is included.Those departing later in the day can explore the town and countryside or choose to go into Venice again for exploration. &nbsp;​Breakfast is included.

Additionally, each traveler will have to carry a small backpack with a change of clothes and their toiletries on day 4 up to the rifugio and on day 5 back down from the rifugio (but not during the via ferratas).&nbsp;​4. Each traveler will also have to purchase travel insurance of their choosing that fits specific requirements. This insurance starts at approximately 20 USD.​5. Note that there are some parts of the itinerary at high altitudes. The highest elevation the group will sleep at is 7,917 ft/2413m on night 4 after spending 2 nights at 4000ft/1219m. The highest reached point of the trip will be 9,301ft/2834m on day 5.

This trip takes you on a journey around the 8th highest mountain in the world, Manaslu. Reaching a peak of 26,781 feet, Manaslu is less crowded than Everest yet just as dramatic. Manaslu is named from the Sanskrit word “Manasa,” meaning soul or intellect, so it is often translated as the "Mountain of the Spirit," which feels very fitting.&nbsp; While we won't be doing any technical climbing or going up to 26,781 feet on this trip, get your hiking boots ready because we will be trekking the Manaslu Circuit for 8 days through remote Himalayan villages shaped by Tibetan culture, across suspension bridges over roaring rivers, into high alpine landscapes, and over passes adorned with prayer flags where blue sheep, yaks, and eagles roam.&nbsp;​Along the way, we'll reach Manaslu Base Camp (15,748ft/4800m) and Larke Pass (16,752ft/5106m) while trekking in parts of the Manaslu Conservation Area and Annapurna Conservation Area. You can experience local life, visit monasteries, and enjoy the culture and hospitality of the people who’ve lived in these remote areas for centuries.&nbsp; For 7 nights on the trek plus the night before and after, we will rest and relax overnight in teahouses, which are accommodations along trekking routes in Nepal that offer basic lodging and meals. The teahouses are run by the local communities, meaning you’ll have the chance to chat with many friendly locals and other hikers from around the world. Rather than camping, everyone will have a bed each night, access to a shower every night but 2,&nbsp;and a dining room with a fire where we’ll eat warm meals as a group. For those who need it, wifi is available most nights, but there’s nothing as refreshing as a social media detox.&nbsp;During this hike, you can&nbsp;truly disconnect from the world and give yourself a real mental break.&nbsp; The menu options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner include dal bhat (a delicious mountain staple served with unlimited portions of a garlicky lentil soup, rice, curry, and various sides) momos (dumplings), and more Nepali options but also fried rice, stir-fry noodles, pancakes, oatmeal, popcorn, and more. Even people who don’t regularly love tea will be ready for a hot cup of masala tea or ginger and lemon tea with a drizzle of fresh Himalayan honey with every meal. This trip is as much about experiencing the vibrant culture of Nepal as it is about the astounding nature.&nbsp;On day one, you'll arrive in Kathmandu, the country’s capital, which sits in a valley surrounded by Himalayan peaks. Right away, you’ll be introduced to the delicious Nepali cuisine, although there is an extensive variety of options to fuel up before we hike. On day two, you’ll see busy streets full of markets, several colorful Hindu temples, Swayambhunath (the "Monkey Temple"), and the bustling Patan Durbar Square, a place that has been home to royalty for centuries. From Kathmandu, we’ll take depart to start the trek in private jeeps. After the trek finished, we will return together to Kathmandu to celebrate the trek.&nbsp;&nbsp;The combination of mountains, nature, culture, and amazing food in the Himalayas is truly unlike anywhere else on Earth. &nbsp;
